The landscape is marshy terrain. The low Barnim plateau is located north and the Teltow plateau located south. The Berlin-Warsaw Urstromtal, which is an ancient river valley, located between the two plateaus. The Spree River currently follows the valley. The Spree River meets Havel River in Spandau, the most western borough in Berlin. The outer areas of Berlin consist of many lakes and woodlands. The city has a temperate/mesothermal climate with moderate rainfall.
Berlin's current appearance is mostly shaped by its chief role in the history of Germany in the twentieth century. Popular landmarks are the Fernsehturm (TV tower) at Alexanderplatz in Mitte, the Brandenburg Gate, the Gendarmenmarkt, the Konzerthaus (Concert Hall), the Berliner Dom, Schloss Charlottenburg, and Potsdamer Platz. The Museum Island is a World Heritage Site.
Berlin is a major area of science, culture, media, and politics in Europe. It's economy is based on the service area such as railways, hospitals, and public transportation. It has many world-renowned educational institutions, museums, sporting events, personalities, and orchestras.
